Leather Repair Kits Leather Restoration and Care Products by Leather Magic!

WILL THE REPAIR KITS WORK ON BOTH LEATHER & VINYL?

Generally speaking, No. The materials that make up the Leather Magic Repair Kits are designed specifically for one type of material, either leather or vinyl, never one repair kit for all. There are numerous vinyl materials designed to simulate real, natural leather. These materials are known by many differet names including “Leatherette”, “Faux Leather” any many other misleading descriptions. It is important to know which material you are working with prior to purchasing a repair kit.

We have experimented with the leather repair products on vinyl and found them to do a decent job. However, the durability and longevity of a permanent vinyl repair is not guaranteed and cannot be expected.

The chemical make-up of Leather and Vinyl differ so dramatically, that it is impossible to make a repair material that will work equally well on both materials.

Vinyl is made from Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC Plastic) and contains plasticizers which make it very soft and flexible. Because Vinyl is a plastic material, it must be repaired in a different manner, using different materials in order to achieve maximum results. Vinyl Repair is basically a “welding” process requiring a great deal of heat. The amount of heat required to cure vinyl repair compound is far more than leather can endure. Therefore, any product stating that it may be used on both leather and vinyl is misleading. Some repair kits advertise that they may be used to repair both Leather and Vinyl. Although the immediate results may be pleasing, the longevity of the repair is short, and the repair process may actually cause more damage to the Leather over the long run than the good that it did. A true repair kit will work well on one material or the other, but never equally as well on both.

If you have a need of making a repair to a vinyl product, you will want to consider our Vinyl Repair Kit.
